A mini-split that is underperforming in Putnam County deserves a close look at how it was sized and set up before anything else gets blamed. 56 severe weather events were recorded in Putnam County, Ohio between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is something a system here encounters now and then, not a condition it runs against continuously. A contractor quoting or diagnosing a mini-split in this county starts with refrigerant line routing, mounting placement and the quality of the original install, because those are the variables most likely to explain what is wrong. The weather record is real, but it does not carry much of the burden of explanation here.

The electrical service in a house is what decides how a mini-split installation goes, and in Putnam County a lot of houses are carrying wiring that was sized for something it was never asked to run before. Half the homes in Putnam County, Ohio were built in 1972 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor quoting a job here opens the panel before pricing the equipment, because the wall where the unit mounts is the smaller question. What the service can deliver is the larger one.

The Parts of a Mini-split System and What HVAC Installation Involves

Isometric line illustration of a cutaway building interior with two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by piping to an outdoor condenser unit on the ground outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on a wall inside the room being conditioned. It holds the evaporator coil and the blower that moves air across it. The outdoor condenser unit sits on a pad or bracket outside the house and carries the compressor and the second coil.

A refrigerant line set runs through a small opening in the wall to connect the two units, carrying refrigerant between the indoor and outdoor sides. A condensate drain line runs from the indoor head to the outside, removing moisture the coil pulls from the air.

The drawing shows the general layout of a mini-split system, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece applies to your house.

Heating and cooling equipment in Putnam County works against whatever the local climate delivers, and that workload shapes what a system needs to handle over its life. A mini-split sized and installed for local conditions holds up differently than one spec'd without that context.
