Step 1 of 3: Equipment

Sizing a mini-split for Athens County starts with what the climate asks of it, and that is a local question a catalog spec sheet does not answer. 129 severe weather events were recorded in Athens County, Ohio between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is a standing condition here, not an occasional one, and a contractor pricing or specifying a system accounts for the cumulative load it will carry. A unit that fits the square footage but ignores that operating environment will run harder and longer than its rating assumes from the first season forward.

A basement or crawl space with insulated metal ductwork running beneath wooden floor joists, concrete block walls, a coiled black hose, and two cardboard boxes on a concrete floor.

Ductless systems skip the duct question entirely, but the electrical panel is another matter. Half the homes in Athens County, Ohio were built in 1977 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A house built that long before residential air conditioning became standard was wired around a load budget that a mini-split outdoor unit can push past, and the panel itself may not accept the breaker a new circuit requires. A contractor pricing a mini-split installation here will open that panel before they can finalize what the job costs.

The Parts of a Mini-Split System and What Gets Installed

Isometric illustration of a cutaway gray house with a dark shingled roof, showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by piping to an outdoor condenser unit on the ground outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on a wall inside the room being served, and it is the piece a homeowner sees every day. The outdoor condenser unit sits on the ground or on a bracket outside the house, usually close to where the indoor unit is positioned on the other side of the wall.

A refrigerant line set runs through a small hole in the wall to connect the two units, and a condensate drain line carries moisture away from the indoor handler to the outside. A dedicated electrical circuit feeds the outdoor unit, and a control board inside each unit manages communication between the two.

The drawing shows the general layout of these components, and a licensed contractor determines what the installation requires for your specific house.
